JOHN P. McMAHON, Town Clerk of West Hoboken, N. J., is the eldest son of Bernard and Catherine McMahon, natives of Ireland, who came to America in 1860 and settled in West Hoboken, where they still reside, their other children being Edward and Catherine.

He was born in that town on the 29th of November, 1868, and there obtained his education in St. Mary's parochial school, graduating at the age of seventeen. He then engaged in the retail milk business in West Hoboken. Although a mere youth, he developed ability and sound judgment, and for about ten years conducted a large and successful trade. His popularity is attested by the confidence and esteem in which he has long been held by the community, and especially by his wide circle of friends and acquaintances As a Democrat he took an active part in politics, and in the spring of 1896 was elected Town Clerk of the Town of West Hoboken, which office he still holds, being re-elected in April, 1899, for a second term of three years. By virtue of this position he is and has been also clerk of the Board of Town Council.

Mr. McMahon has discharged his official duties with singular fidelity, consistency, and success, and has won the respect of all classes irrespective of party affiliations. He is a prominent member of the Robert Davis Association, and takes a deep interest in the affairs of his town and county. On April 27, 1899, he married Mrs. Elise Guarnerio, of West Hoboken, an accomplished and most estimable lady, and resides at No. 501 Spring Street in that town.
