V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Each year hundreds of V-Day benefit events are presented around the globe to educate the world about the reality and prevalence of violence against women and girls, and to raise money to support organizations that work to stop the violence. Part of what makes this event special is the opportunity it offers our community to participate in this global movement, to be part of a collective voice, a voice that says, “NO” to violence against women and girls.

This year, the beneficiaries of Jersey City's V-Day performance proceeds will be our own local organizations: The York Street Project and Women Rising.

The York Street Project is a weaving of innovative programs that shelter, feed, educate and promote the healing and independence of women in need and their children, allowing them to lead self-fulfilled, self-sufficient lives. Their mission is accomplished through providing a nationally accredited alternative high school, a safe and structured residence for single mothers and their children, an early childhood development center and affordable housing and support for women with limited incomes. Serving over 250 women and children annually, The York Street Project is under the direction and
leadership of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace.

Women Rising is the foremost social service and advocacy organization for women in Hudson County. It assists women and their families to achieve self-sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives by providing access to shelter, advocacy, childcare and job training. Women Rising is the State's designated provider for Hudson County's domestic violence programming, offering immediate and comprehensive access to services 24 hours a day, seven days a week for women and children victimized by domestic violence. They serve over 2,500 women and children annually.
