This one has a long answer:
If you look at the rules posted in the NYC cab, it says that out of state trip fares are to be agreed upon between passenger & driver (also that driver doesn't have to go -- it's voluntary).
You hear alot about doubling the meter -- well, that's not written down but it does make sense in that once they drop you off out of town, they're not supposed to pick anybody else up until they reach the City limits.
I live downtown, too, and my advise is not to agree to a flat fee. Certainly not $45 -- even $35 is way too much if you got the cab near the Holland
From time to time I'll take a yellow to or from the City Hall area to Times Sq. either late at night or in the early morning.
Here's what seems most and most drivers agree to it:
- The mileage is about 6.25 miles and the cost has been $12.50-$13.75 on the meter.
-- Double the meter ONCE YOU'VE REACHED THE HOLLAND TUNNEL UNTIL YOU ARRIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION. [Don't let them double the entire fare, you could have hopped out by the Holland Tunnel and gotten a new cab for $1.50, you should't spend $20 to get from 72nd & Columbus to the Holland.]
-- Give them $4.00 for toll at Holland
-- Give 15% tip and round up to the nearest dollar since they didn't have to take you, after all.
So you end up:
13.00 on the meter
5.00 double from Holland
4.00 tolls
-----
22.00
4.00 tip
-----
26.00
For where you and I live, if you're below 14th Street on the West Side, the final total should be close to double the fare.
: I recently moved to JC & need some info if it's available. I took a cab from NYC to JC & the driver said there was a flat fee, but he didn't know what it was supposed to be. He mentioned $45, but we were near the Holland & I was going to Grove & Mercer, no way.
