: I was wondering if anybody know anthing about the Lafayette tour coming up sometime in May.

Lafayette History Festival & Tour 2002

Saturday, May 18, 2002, 12 noon-5pm

Sponsored by Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, the City of Jersey City, and the Division of Cultural Affairs. Co-sponsored by the Communipaw Avenue Block Association, Monumental Baptist Church, the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, and the Afro-American Historical Society Museum.

Free and Open to the Public. No registration required!

Join us for a day-long celebration of Lafayette, the mythological cradle of historic New Jersey where in 1609 Henry Hudson docked his vessel, "The Half Moon," at the foot of Communipaw Avenue in Communipaw Cove, setting the stage for settlement along the Hudson River. Lafayette, adorned with magnificent architectural remnants representing two centuries, is also considered to be the state's oldest African-American community.

There will be a walking and bus tour of significant landmarks in the district, including the Provident Beehive Bank, the Dutch Reformed Church, Manning Avenue, the Whitlock Cordage, the Pullman Porters' House, and All Saints' School, among many others. Several 19th century residences, churches and schools will be open to the public (look for the signs and balloons!). Key African-American sites, such as a forgotten slave burial ground and the estates of local luminaries Dr. Lena Edwards and Dr. George E. Cannon, will be visited. Tables and tents with historical displays and information will be set up.
