Of The 9/11 Attacks And The Days Which Followed
Unavoidably, what is remembered first of September 11, 2001 and the days which followed is that which was most visceral – sorrow and tragedy, confusion and chaos, fear and anger such as most of us had never before felt.
For those of us in Hudson County, where the disaster played out literally before our eyes, there will always be the memory of the unending wail of sirens echoing in our streets, the dazed look in the eyes of thousands who were part of the exodus of evacuees streaming up from our waterfront, and, of course, the ever-rising column of smoke that marked the hole in our skyline where the World Trade Center had stood just earlier that morning and where we had all believed the Twin Towers would stand for the ages.
And as a nation, we are dedicated to remembering all those who perished on that awful day.
But in remembering September 11, 2001, we must also pay tribute to those who rose to extraordinary challenge and gave of themselves to help others. In Hudson County alone, tens of thousands of people donated supplies needed in the epic recovery work. Many others volunteered to gather and transport the supplies. Still others volunteered to dig through the rubble of what had once been the World Trade Center.
The courage and commitment demonstrated by these men and women was the bulwark that stood firm against fear and confusion. Their humanity proved far more powerful than the inhumane act of terror to which they so selflessly responded. They are heroes in the purest sense, having given of themselves without need for prompting or expectation of reward.
Please join other members of our community at the 9/11 Memorial Fountain in Journal Square, Jersey City on September 11, 2003, from 6 PM to 7 PM for a ceremony that will both remember those who lost there lives two years ago and pay tribute to those from Hudson County, as well as across the county, who volunteered to help at a time of extraordinary need.
