Jersey City Family Health Center Campus March 2003 The Jersey City Family Health Center and Reach Out and Read, a national children’s literacy program, need your help! Have you given any thought on how you can give back to your community? Perhaps you have but just can’t think of where to go or who to ask. Well here’s an opportunity that will help the children in your community. Reach Out and Read is a national literacy program that encourages children to read. Their mission is to reach as many children as possible and teach them the importance of reading. Reach Out and Read make’s literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading. Here’s how you can help, the Jersey City Family Health Center is looking for volunteers who can come in and spend at least 20 minutes reading to a child or small group during their wellness visit at which time children 6 months to 5 years of age with a special focus on children growing up in poverty will receive a free book. The reading periods are held at 10:00 a.m. and then again at 2:00 p.m. daily. If you can spare some time once, twice, or three times a week please call Anna Rojas, Director of Volunteer Services, Jersey City Medical Center at 201-915-2048 or via email arojas@libertyhcs.org The program is scheduled to commence on Monday, March 10, 2003. You have the power today to help shape a better tomorrow!
