In the past few months, the Jersey City Fire Department has not only increased its size, but new fire apparatus has also been added to the department's fleet helping to make the job of the city's Bravest a bit easier. July marked a historic moment for the department when the first female firefighters, Constance Zappella and Maureen Nally, were sworn in with a class of 40 firefighters during ceremonies at City Hall. Later that month, Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham promoted 18 firefighters to the rank of captain. Mayor Cunningham added, "This summer, the Fire Department also upgraded its vehicles by purchasing four new fire engines and two ladder trucks. The Fire Department is one of the most valuable departments in our city, providing services to thousands." "That's why we are working to get the men and women of the department new equipment and the latest technology to help them do their job." Earlier this year, a new Heavy Rescue Truck was put into service, a rig that responds to every working fire in the city in addition to serious car accidents and other rescue operations. Later this year two additional ladder trucks and two additional pumper trucks will also be put on line as the modernization of the department continues.
