The Jersey City Economic Development Corporation is a private not-for-profit corporation formed in 1980 by the City Council of Jersey City to stimulate industrial and commercial growth in Jersey City. The EDC's mission is to provide leadership that will facilitate business and community development throughout Jersey City. The JCEDC is the premier economic development agency and the leading Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) authority of New Jersey. EDC leadership has established the "Holistic Urban Building" revitalization plan, an initiative that accommodates the needs of both the business and residential communities. Among its notable programs are the $28 million Martin Luther King HUB Redevelopment Project; the $7.5 million Journal Square Streetscape; the Citywide Blockfront Restoration Program; the establishment of Special Improvement Districts (SIDs) in Central Avenue, Historic Downtown Newark Avenue, McGinley Square, and Journal Square; the restoration of the Landmark Loews Theatre; and the biggest security program in the Northeast, the $5 million Closed Circuit Telivision (CCTV) program.
