Contact: Sgt. Edgar Martinez May 12, 2004 The Jersey City Police Department in conjunction with the community based organization PACO were awarded one of the eight "2004 Partnering for Traffic Safety Grant" from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration JERSEY CITY-Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, Police Chief Ronald Buonocore, Mr. Eliu Rivera, PACO and representatives from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety will announce the details and requirements from the Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development to create a child safety program. The child safety program will be unveiled on Thursday, May 13, 2004, at l p.m., at 392 Manila Avenue, in Jersey City.
"Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death of children over the age of six in the United States. The proper use of child car seats is one of the simplest and most effective methods available for protecting the lives of our young children in the event of a motor vehicle crash," says NHTSA.
The multifaceted approach toward injury prevention employs the disciplines of education, healthcare, community groups, law enforcement, and the media. These disciplines form the building blocks of a solid network of community based partnerships and programs designed to increase awareness and education. Also this approach allows development of strategies for specific target populations, fosters community involvement, and promotes public awareness. The City of Jersey, Jersey City Police Department, Liberty Academy, New Jersey Division of Highway Safety Administration, and PACO has forged an alliance to educate the community on the statistics and importance of child safety when traveling. Each participant will attend a 45 minute information session on child safety and at the completion of a pre-survey and post survey, will receive a car booster seat, t-shirt and or a children's book on "I'm safe in the car". For further information pertaining to this new child safety program please call the PACO Agency at (201) 963-8282 or at 392 Manila Avenue, Jersey City. Release # 04- 04
