Jersey City Hosts Macy’s Fireworks “Beneath a Summer Sky” to Draw Thousands JERSEY CITY – This year’s annual Independence Day fireworks display will have a special flare, as the City partners with Macy’s to host a magnificent firework display in the Hudson River off of Liberty State Park. Known for having one of the most spectacular fireworks presentations in the nation, Macy’s partnered with Jersey City on the idea of launching its annual extravaganza from a barge between Ellis and Liberty Islands, two symbols so much a part of our nation’s freedom and history. “Beneath a Summer Sky” will celebrate the 228th birthday of the United States. This year’s Independence Day Celebration – in partnership with Macy’s, the City of Jersey City Department of Health & Human Services/Division of Cultural Affairs, the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation, and the Urban Enterprise Zone – is the 28th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks®. In addition to Jersey City, pyrotechnics will also be released from barges at South Street Seaport and from the East River in Midtown Manhattan. The event is expected to draw dozens of thousands once again to Liberty State Park. “This is a great opportunity for the residents of Jersey City to participate in our nation’s greatest demonstration of patriotism, the July 4th celebration,” said Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith. “And what better place to watch the fireworks and celebrate America’s independence than in Jersey City, where you can see not only Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, but also the beautiful Manhattan skyline, as well.” Smith also pointed out that these symbols of freedom are so much a part of our American identity and that residents are in store for a memorable evening. “Not so long ago our waterfront was the scene of tragedy, as thousands of New Yorkers fled Lower Manhattan on Sept. 11,” Smith said. “Our residents rushed to the shore to be of aid and so now this is a time for us to give back to them and to celebrate our independence and our way of life, which we so cherish and are still defending today.” The fireworks begin around 9 p.m. – when thousands of shells will simultaneously burst into the night, igniting a fireworks extravaganza. However, the skies will truly light up at 8 p.m. when a team of four United States Air Force A-10 Fighter Jets, courtesy of the 102nd Fighter Unit of Massachusetts, fly over Liberty State Park. NBC will broadcast the fireworks with coverage of all three locations and 1010 WINS radio station will air the show’s musical accompaniment. Concessions will be available at the park and residents will be allowed to bring their own refreshments. During the event, the city will also provide 5,000 free ice cream treats. Alcohol is strictly prohibited. The City urges early arrival to the park to avoid traffic delays and to take advantage of limited parking. Fireworks can be viewed from all areas of Liberty State Park, but for a clean, unobstructed view of the show, attendees are encouraged to make their way to Green Park which can be accessed via Freedom Way. To get to Liberty State Park by car take the New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 14B and follow signs to the park. If traffic is heavy, take alternate exits 14A or 14C. Law enforcement officials will also be directing traffic into the park. If traveling by public transportation, take the PATH train to the Pavonia/Newport Station, transfer to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and ride to Liberty State Park. At the Light Rail stop there will be a shuttle that will transport to the Liberty Science Center and the Interpretative Center, from where attendees can walk to Green Park.///
