This Autumn the Newport Swim and Fitness Center will begin the first phase of a multi-million dollar, renovation scheduled for completion in Spring 2005. Though several improvements and expansion projects have been achieved since the Center opened in 1988, this will be a large-scale renovation of the entire club, adding approximately 10,000 square feet. In addition to a complete replacement of the swimming pool’s roof and mechanical systems, members will have use of a brand new octagon-shaped whirlpool. New strength training and hamstring equipment also are being installed. Cardiovascular machines will be updated with a new Cardio Theater personal viewing system, featuring individual flat screen televisions. Studio space is being expanded to accommodate demands for aerobics classes and children’s programming; and additional space will be created to allow members a separate stretching area. The current renovation program calls for the addition of a new lounge, where members can relax after workouts, enjoying such perks as television, courtesy phones, a variety of magazines, and complimentary coffee. More showers and lockers for the men’s and women’s locker rooms are part of the overall effort to better serve members’ needs. The exterior of the Swim and Fitness Center also is getting a major makeover. Designed by Craig Smith of the prestigious firm Smith, Palmer, & Famulari, the façade of the building will have a totally new look to it, particularly with the incorporation of ground level storefronts. “We are changing the face of River Drive South,” said Jamie LeFrak, Newport’s Managing Director. “By changing the façade of the building, and with the addition of retail space, we hope to liven up Newport street life, thereby increasing foot traffic to the area.” As River Drive South undergoes a transformation from a side street to an active retail residential thoroughfare it will become a continuum of other thriving retail businesses in the area, including Newport Flowers, Babo, Experience LifeSpa, and Duane Reade.
