Spirit of American Volunteerism To Be Honored As Part Of The 9/11 Memorial & Volunteerism Ceremony

September 11, 2004 6 PM
Journal Square, Jersey City

By The City Of Jersey City, Mayor L. Harvey Smith

9/11 is, of course, about the loss of innocent life – those who were attacked without warning or provocation, and those who went to their deaths trying to help others.

But 9/11 is also about the selfless commitment to community, determination and courage that was inspired across America in the days and weeks after the attack.

This was a re-kindling of the spirit of volunteerism that is as old and as fundamental to the American character as a colonial barn-raising. The individual gives of him- or herself for the betterment of the whole.

The City of Jersey City believes that to faithfully remember those who were lost on 9/11, it is incumbent upon us to honor the commitment to community that reflected some degree of meaning upon their sacrifice. We must therefore always pay tribute to the efforts of those who so willingly gave of themselves in the aftermath of 9/11. But we must do more still – we must try to engender this spirit of community in everyday life.
In this way, we can remember those lost on 9/11 not only with sorrow, but also gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice that inspires a continual renewal of the American spirit.

On September 11, 2004, at 6 PM, next to the 9/11 Memorial Fountain at Journal Square (alongside Kennedy Boulevard), Jersey City Mayor L. Harvey Smith and other dignitaries will ask all citizens to join them in remembering the 37 Jersey City residents and all those who were lost on 9/11, and to honor five members of our community who have exemplified the American spirit of volunteerism. Three were directly involved in 9/11 relief efforts. Two have shown by their example that commitment to community lives on, strong and free in America.

The event will proceed, rain or shine, with the rain alternate location being the Grand Lobby of the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre at Journal Square.
