Jersey City—Somewhere, in someone’s drawer, in an attic maybe, is a lost piece of history documenting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s visit to Jersey City on September 21, 1965. Dr. King
received an honorary Doctorate of Law from St. Peter’s College. On that occassion, Dr. King gave an address titled “The American Dream.” The Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University
does not have a copy of the text of the address or a recording of the address.
We have every reason to believe that at least one recording was made of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking in Jersey City. We know residents who recall listening to a recording of the
address in a grammar school assembly years ago. It was an audio tape described to that grammar school assembly as an address delivered by Dr. King to a Jersey City audience.
If you or anybody you know has any information about a recording of Dr. King’s address at St. Peter’s College or any other speeches he might have made here in Jersey City or any news clippings, programs, photographs, film footage,
and above all the recording itself, please contact info@cityofjerseycity.org or be in touch with the Urban Times News at the email address above. Don’t let Dr.
King’s visit to Jersey City be lost to history!
