A new permanent display graces City Hall's first floor lobby. A 107-year-old finial, or crown, that once sat upon the roof of the historic building is enshrined in a glass case outside of the City Clerk's Office. A finial is often called "the cherry on top," because of its unique design and beauty. The finial on display is one of five original designs that sat atop the five 40-foot tall bell-shaped cupola domes on the roof of City Hall when construction was completed in 1896. During the City Hall Fire in 1979, the roof and domes were damaged and as a precaution, the finials and tall domes were removed. Now, it is back at City Hall, though inside, and sheds a glimpse into the building's past.
