Applying for a Marriage License in Jersey City

  1. Apply at the City CLerk's Office, City Hall (1st Floor), 280 Grove Street
  2. The female must reside in Jersey City.
  3. Exceptions:

    1. Female does not live in the state of New Jersey and the groom is a resident.
    2. Both applicants are nonresidents of the state and plan to marry in Jersey City.

  4. License fee -- $28.00.
  5. Application must be made at least 72 hours before ceremony.
  6. License is valid for 30 days from date of issuance.
  7. License is valid only in the State of New Jersey.

Applicants must provide:

  1. Proof of current address.
  2. Witness:
    1. Must know applicants for at least six months.
    2. Over 18.
    3. Can be a relative.
    4. Provide proof of current residence.
  3. If an applicant has been previously married, divorce papers or death certificate must be submitted.

The City Clerk's Office is open from 8:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

To schedule the ceremony at City Hall

After you've obtained the marriage license from the City Clerk's Office, go to the Mayor's Office on the second floor of City Hall. You will then be given a choice of times and dates. The waiting period is at least three days.
