The Monticello Community Development Corporation (MCDC) is a non-profit corporation consisting of community residents, business and property owners and other stakeholders working to revitalize and economically stimulate Monticello Avenue by implementing a recognized four-point approach to revitalization as prescribed by the Main Street programs of the National Trust For Historic Preservation and the State of New Jersey. THE VISION Monticello Avenue
a gathering place, a cultural center, a proud neighborhood. An historically-preserved neighborhood shopping district with an arts overlay offering a mix of retail, restaurants, service businesses, and arts-related venues and activities reflecting Jersey City's diversity, strong sense of community, and unique geographic setting. THE HISTORY In the Spring of 2001 neighborhood meetings were held via a "steering committee" to galvanize the community into creating a unified "Vision" for the Monticello Avenue corridor. The steering committee outreached to community organizations to assist with creating a cohesive plan for Monticello's revitalization, resulting in the more formal organization now known as the Monticello Community Development Corporation (MCDC). Participating organizations include the Jersey City Economic Development Corp., Jersey City Episcopal Community Development Corp., Women Rising and Fairmount Housing, Jersey City Planning Division, Jersey City Community Police Partnership, and the New Jersey Dept. of Transportation. Sub- committees were formed to research the area's history and architectural significance, compile a list of available abandoned/foreclosed/for sale properties, and also provide outreach to the community in order to involve additional retail merchants in the process. GOALS/OBJECTIVES Create an economic and cultural center for our Monticello Avenue neighborhood. Design new or rehabilitate existing buildings to attract those who come to learn, or seek entertainment and cultural activities. Create a neighborhood where residents and visitors feel safe. Create and develop jobs, and stabilize the surrounding neighborhood. Create a link between the shopping districts of the MLK Hub, McGinley Square, and Journal Square. Create a hallmark for an interesting neighborhood to live in that all of Jersey City will be proud of.
