Tour 17
Scene of the British Invasion From Staten Island During the Revolution

(Staten Island, N. Y.)–Elizabeth–Plainfield–Somerville–Junction with US 22 and US 206; State 28.
New York Line to junction with US 22 and US 206, 26.5 miles.

Central R.R. of New Jersey parallels the route throughout.
First-class accommodations in Elizabeth; tourist homes and small hotels elsewhere.
Three- and four-lane concrete roadbed.

State 28 runs west from the New Jersey water front through an industrial zone and a series of suburban towns, scenes of frequent clashes in the Revolution when the section was invaded by the British from Staten Island. Along the route at the base of the low-lying Watchung Mountains are many Colonial buildings, a few old mills, and picturesque old churches, though more recent development has largely obscured these survivors of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

On GOETHALS BRIDGE (car and passengers 500), State 28 crosses the New York Line, 0.2 miles west of Staten Island. The route runs straight ahead from the Bridge Plaza over Bayway. State 28 here follows Elmora Ave.

At 0.9 miles, at a traffic circle, is the junction with US 1 (see Tour 1).

At 1.6 miles is the junction with State 27 (see Tour 8).
