Tour 1
New Brunswick

At 39 miles US 1 crosses the Raritan River on COLLEGE BRIDGE, a handsome structure of reinforced concrete arches, designed by Morris Goodkind of the State highway department and given an architectural award in 1930. Part of the campus of NEW JERSEY COLLEGE FOR WOMEN is R., spread out upon the bluff above the river. The spire is that of VOORHEES CHAPEL, on the campus. Beyond are some of the buildings of New Brunswick; and the view upstream is not unlike that at Stratford on Avon. The road passes the NEW BRUNSWICK WAR MEMORIAL (L) at 39.6 m.

At 39.8 miles, at a traffic circle, is the junction with State S28 (see Tour 13).

Right on State S28 is NEW BRUNSWICK, 2.5 m. (125 alt., 34,555 Pop.) (see NEW BRUNSWICK).

Points of Interest: Rutgers University Campuses and Buildings, White House, Guest House, Joyce Kilmer Memorial (museum), and others.

South of New Brunswick are (R) the grounds of the NEW JERSEY STATE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, 41.1 m. (see NEW BRUNSWICK).

At 44.8 m, is the junction with US 130 (see Tour 19).

The highway here closely follows the original route of stagecoach days, when it was an important land link between the water highways of the Raritan and Delaware Rivers. For almost 25 miles there is no perceptible curve, although there are two or three very slight deviations from a straight line. To prevent collision, the 11.9-mile stretch south of the railroad over- pass has been divided by a center strip, and the work is to be continued toward Trenton. The concrete was forced apart by compressed air to make room for the strip and curbs; a new subgrade was prepared at the side, and as much as a 500-foot length was moved into position at one time.
