NORTH BERGEN - The first thing Timothy Kides wanted was a cold soda.
Although weary from 80 hours of virtual non-stop activity, the township resident flashed a victory sign Friday afternoon after breaking his own world record of 125,000 sit-ups.
"I'm too happy to be sore," said Kides, who was permitted only a five-minute break each hour.
His supporters, who shouted "Timmy, Timmy," doused Kides in champagne upon his setting the record.
In besting his previous mark by a single sit-up, Kides helped raise $13,000 in donations for United Cerebral Palsy of Hudson County and $6,000 more in pledges. The money will help the financially troubled center pay some of its bills.
Kides' previous record, set in March, is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
His latest accomplishment marks the fifth time Kides has established a world sit-up record. But the North Bergen High School teacher says this event is his last.
"I'm retiring now from sit-ups. I'm the king of the universe. If there's any record I'm going to go for, it's probably jumping jacks," he said.
The sit-up marathon was organized by the Volunteers of North Bergen, a community fund-raising group.
