: : An Open Letter from Maureen Healy : : SHAME ON YOU LOUIS MANZO FOR MAKING THIS ONE OF THE DIRTIEST CAMPAIGNS IN OUR CITY'S HISTORY : : Dear Mr. Manzo: : : I was born in Jersey City, raised in Jersey City, got married in Jersey City and raised a family here. All of our four children were educated here, attended college and are embarking on their careers. One daughter currently teachers in a Jersey City elementary school; another will hopefully be attending law school in January. One son just began his training at the Jersey City Police Academy and the other recently received certification for the Jersey City Fire Department. I know they will be worthy additions to our city's Finest and our city's Bravest. : : My husband, Jerramiah, is a respected and honored former Assistant Prosecutor and Chief Judge of the Jersey City Municipal Court and current Councilman-at-Large, elected by the people of Jersey City. I myself am currently the School Nurse at PS. No. 12 and Infectious Diseases Nurse for the entire Jersey City school system. So, as you can plainly see, the Healys are not only the sons, daughters and grandchildren of immigrant parents, but a tight-knit family that takes great pride in our accomplishments and one which has and still is contributing significantly to making the quality of life better for all of the residents of the city we love. : : Other than giving my husband moral support, I had no intention of injecting myself into this campaign. However, your actions have not only caused this campaign to become one of the dirtiest in Jersey City's history but it has now invaded the privacy of my family and forced me to speak out. I speak specifically of a compromising photo of my husband that is being spread, around town and bandied about in the press by your campaign. Mr. Gerry McCann, who is your Chief of Staff, is the predominant perpetrator of this action. Once again, Mr. McCann - who has already disgraced himself, his family and Jersey City by his past actions as a convicted felon - is allowed by you to once again participate in the political process. : : Perhaps, because you, Mr. Manzo, never had the responsibility of raising a family, it is difficult for you to appreciate how hurtful and vindictive your actions are to my family by circulating such a photo in an attempt to discredit my husband's candidacy. The issue here is not what the photo portrays, or how it was obtained. It raises the more serious question as to what kind of people would resort to this tactic to win an election? As a three-time loser as a candidate for Mayor, you may try to kid the people of Jersey City, Mr. Manzo, but let's not kid ourselves. That photo was circulated by Mr. McCann with your permission and knowledge and you did nothing to stop it. You subsequently used the Jersey Journal to further exacerbate the situation and as a forum to run away from your involvement. Therefore, I submit that it raises serious questions about your moral character, judgment and ability to bring together a city torn apart by political wars and personal agendas. : : When my husband decided to seek the honor of being Mayor of Jersey City, we made the decision - aS a family - to support his wishes and campaign with him. But there was one proviso - he agreed that he would not resort to attacking opponents on a personal level. It was an easy agreement for him, that's the kind of individual he is anyway. We did not want to become part of the usual low-level campaigning that had become a trademark of Jersey City elections. Odd, isn't it, how current events have a way of changing one's perspective of history. : : Not once during the campaign, at any debate or forum or gathering, did my husband once mention Gerry McCann by name or the fact that your Chief of Staff is not only a convicted felon, but in 1985 attempted to suppress minority voters in the mayoral runoff election. McCann is, in fact, so notorious that Jersey City became the laughing stock of Trenton when you brought him into the State Assembly as your legislative Chief of Staff - a further shame our city does not need. : : Not once during the campaign did Jerramiah Healy mention the fact that your brother, Ronald - who is very much involved in financing all your political campaigns - also has criminal legal problems, having pleaded guilty to charges of insider trading. Nor did he bring up the fact that you have, not once but twice, stepped up to save the job of a city employee - Daniel McMahon - who was hired by your sponsorship, fired from his job, rehired at your insistence and who has cost the City of Jersey City over $105,000 in fines for not doing his job. Your actions in this matter border on the criminal since they condone theft of services and are not the actions of a responsible public servant. : : Mr. Manzo, let's face the truth. My husband has spent most of his adult life putting criminals in jail, either as an Assistant Prosecutor or the Chief Judge of the Jersey City Municipal Court. You have obviously spent most of your time coddling criminals and people who shirk their duties. They are on your staff or enjoy your political largesse. It raises serious questions as to your judgment and fitness to lead Jersey City. Yet, despite this, not once did Jerramiah Healy attack you or your family personally. : : In short, Mr. Manzo, I do not possess my husband's restraint. Get out of my family's face. If you want to do battle with Jerramiah Healy, do it out in the open, on the real issues facing Jersey City, without personal attacks and without hiding behind convicted felons. That's what real men do. : : Very truly yours, BRAVO!!! I've know Jerry Healy for over 30 years. I worked with him in the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and can tell you that he was a damn good criminal attorney. As Chief Judge of the Jersey City Municipal Court, he was able to organize the Court with professionalism and efficiency. He is loved and respected by many municipal court workers, as well as other City workers. Please voters...please keep the dirt and evil out of City Hall so that your tax dollars are put to the finest use...by a Mayor like Jerry Healy
