The "game" of politics has two goals in Hudson...consolidate power and maintain control of money, patronage and budgets. But the amateaurs playing in the big leagues (Gaughan and DeGise) simply don't understand their status as pawns in this thing. Menendez has no loyalty to anyone but himself. He is only interested in building his power and maintaining as much control as possible...without getting too deep into the mud of HC politics. But Menendez's problem has been, and continues to be, that he has always been and continues to be a "street politician". So although he doesn't want to look to "involved" in the local political maneauverings, he always manages to get into it up to his neck. And he has failed twice (in special elections) to select ONE candidate early on for the HCDO to back for Mayor. He failed that last time and we got Schundler. And he failed again this time, so we have a strong possibility that an "anti" candidate like Manzo will become our next mayor. The only upside here for Menendez if Manzo or anyone other than Healy wins, is that he can lay the blame on DeGise and Gaughan and toss the two overboard next time around. If Menendez has managed to make peace with the next JC Mayor prior to the election in the Spring... and if he manages to back the winner in that election...then he may have the chance to once again consolildate power by bringing the JC Dems back together and consolidate the HCDO as a Dem power base prior to the Governor's Election. But as a betting man....I would lay 3:1 odds that Menendez screws it up again. : Never before has North Hudson controlled the county. Menendez is playing a cunning game and he can only pull it off by decieving his two shills (Deguise and Gaughan). : Thats what the Cunningham feud was all about. With Glenn winning the Senate and Manzo the Assembly over the HCDO it sent a clear signal to Menendez that his power base was shrinking. He must have been delighted to no end when 11 candidates are lined up to be mayor. Healy would still have a chance if he wasn;t a lunatic, drunk. So this time you have to blame Deguise and Gaughan for not putting up a legitimate candidate and splitting with menendez. Now if Healy doesn;t win, Menendez has all the right in the world to throw them over the side and then to come up with another scheme to keep the new mayor at bay. That's what political fodder like Harvey Smith and Willie Flood are there for. : : Imagine that....DeGise and Gaughan were set up and knowcked down by our wonderful Cong. Menendez. Did these two really think he would allow them to back a winning candidate for Mayor and thereby consolidate their power? Did they really think that he wanted peace between City and County...all under one banner? : : If they believed that Menendez would not pull the rug on them, then they are two novices who don't belong at the highest levels of County Government. : : Menendez is out for MENENDEZ...and no one else. And it plays better for him to have the county and Jersey City at war. He has enough votes in N. Hudson to get re-elected. We all know that he doesn't really need JC for that. So its in his interest to keep the two levels of government at each other's throats. : : You will see tomorrow how thin Menendez's support really is. You will be able to count the number of county workers out there for Healy tomorrow on one hand. These guys are as bad as they get.
