Sympathy sought for 'criminal' client Star Ledger . . . Vignuolo defended DeSoto, 35, who is now married to a Jersey City police officer and has a young child, saying she will be absolved of the claims brought by Scaffidi. DeSoto was an impressionable 19-year-old when she met the much older Scaffidi, now 59, unknowing of his criminal past, and unsuspecting of the physical and mental abuse that would follow, Vignuolo said in his opening argument. "She entered the relationship with innocence and with confidence, and unfortunately found the dark side of Mr. Scaffidi," said Vignuolo, who is representing DeSoto in a counter claim against Scaffidi. DeSoto has charged Scaffidi with "intentional infliction of mental distress," and is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, Vignuolo said. There was no reaction from the three-man, five-woman jury as Vignuolo quoted several voice mails left by Scaffidi -- in which he used vulgar language and made threats against DeSoto and her family -- after she obtained a restraining order against him in August 2001. "He was really, really angry," Thomas said, passing off the messages as her client's heated response to having his world taken away from him, and his heart broken. . . .
