: DEFINITION

: 
:  Under direction, provides individual or group counseling to
:  individuals or families who participate in a program involving the
:  prevention, cure, or treatment for alcohol abuse; provides public
:  information concerning alcoholism, may assist in developing
:  educational and/or service programs and provides liaison between
:  various concerned organizations; does other related duties.

: EXAMPLES OF WORK:

: 
:  Provides guidance, counseling, and motivation, to alcohol dependent
:  individuals or their families who will begin an alcohol abuse program
:  of cure, prevention, or treatment program.

:  Assists in developing a treatment plan for clients based on their
:  individual needs and behavioral problems.

:  Provides advice regarding available programs and contact persons.

:  Provides motivation during a program of treatment and prevention.

:  Evaluates clients' behavior for progress.

:  Speaks before groups and individuals on alcoholism and its attendant
:  problems.

:  Apprises client's family of progress or special problems

:  Offers suggestions to family members.

:  Assist in the development of programs for the prevention or treatment
:  of alcoholism and related problems.

:  Keeps current with new developments in the field of alcoholism
:  rehabilitation.

:  Prepares reports.

:  Maintains records and files.

:  Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
:  and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by
:  the agency, office, or related units.

:  REQUIREMENTS:

:       EXPERIENCE:

:              One (1) year of experience providing counseling or
:  training involving the treatment and/or rehabilitation of alcoholic
:  dependent persons, or in the prevention of alcoholism.

:       LICENSE:

:       Applicants to be employed by residential substance abuse
:  facilities under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey Department of
:  Health and Senior Services must possess a certification either as a
:  Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor or, as a Certified
:  Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

:       Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
:  in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
:  mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the
:  position.

:  KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

:  Knowledge of the social and economic problems of alcohol dependent
:  persons.

:  Knowledge of the physical and behavioral effects of alcohol.

:  Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.

:  Knowledge of the types of available agencies to provide assistance in
:  the rehabilitation of alcoholic dependent persons.

:  Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of alcoholism.

:  Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, and regulations
:  regarding alcohol abuse.

:  Ability to effectively communicate with individuals of varying
:  backgrounds.

:  Ability to evaluate and assess the needs and problems of clients.

:  Ability to establish an effective therapeutic relationship with
:  client.

:  Ability to work harmoniously with associates, families, individuals,
:  and social organizations.

:  Ability to recognize appropriate treatment modalities.

:  Ability to collect, identify and evaluate significant facts and other
:  information.

:  Ability to evaluate client's progress.

:  Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and informative reports.

:  Ability to maintain records and files.

:  Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
:  recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
:  related units.

:  Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
:  sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
:  Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
:  communication.
