Senator Joseph V. Doria

New Jersey State Senator
31st Legislative District

Senator Joseph V. Doria represents the 31st Legislative District, which includes Bayonne and parts of Jersey City in Hudson County. Senator Doria is also serving his second term as Mayor of his hometown, Bayonne, a position to which he was first elected on May 12, 1998.

On June 9, 2004, Senator Doria was unanimously chosen by the Democratic County Committee members from the 31st Legislative District to serve as interim Senator following the untimely passing of Jersey City Mayor and Senator Glenn D. Cunningham. Senator Doria was elected by the people of the 31st District to fill the remaining three years of Senator Cunningham’s term on November 2, 2004. In the Senate, Senator Doria serves as Vice Chair of the Labor and Economic Growth Committees. He is also a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Joint Committee on the Public Schools
Serving for nearly a quarter century in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1980 to 2004, Joe Doria sponsored more than 240 bills that were signed into law. During his years in the Assembly, Doria authored major pieces of legislation in the areas of education, consumer protection, healthcare and transportation. He is responsible for measures to decrease state bureaucracy, especially in the areas of environmental protection and healthcare. Joe Doria was the sponsor of laws giving New Jersey's public colleges and universities greater autonomy. He also wrote the legislation allowing new mothers to stay in the hospital 48 hours after giving birth. Doria was the founding chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and chaired the Assembly Education Committee.

Chosen as Speaker of the Assembly by his colleagues for the 1990-1991 legislative session, Joe Doria later served as Minority Leader from 1992 to 2002. When he left the Assembly, Doria had been the longest serving member of that body at the time and he was the longest serving Democratic leader of the Assembly in recent history.

His tenure as Mayor is marked by reduced crime, stabilized taxes, improved delivery of municipal services and unprecedented growth and prosperity for the municipality. He is proud that under his leadership, New Jersey Monthly magazine called Bayonne one of the best cities in New Jersey in which to reside, ranking it number one in public safety and in the quality of its schools. Doria also spearheaded construction of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system, which serves thousands of commuters each day and has spurred an increase in real estate values in Bayonne and Jersey City.

After graduating from Marist High School in Bayonne, Joe Doria received a B.A. Magna Cu.m Laude from Saint Peter's College in Jersey City and holds a Master's Degree in American Studies from Boston College. Doria attended New York University and received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University in May of 2000.

Joe Doria first entered public life when he was elected to the Bayonne Board of Education in 1975. He served as Board President from 1976 until 1979, and also was President of the Hudson County School Boards Association from 1978 to 1979.

Beginning his career in education as a social studies teacher at Holy Family Academy in Bayonne, Doria later started began teaching at Saint Peter's College and served as an administrator at the College, most recently as Director of Human Resources.

Involved in numerous community activities, Joe is an active member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Bayonne and is a former President of the Parish Council. He has served as a Parish Trustee since 1977.

Doria has received over 200 awards and citations from both public and private organizations. He is a member of the Boards of Trustees of Liberty Healthcare System and Saint Peter's College, as well as the Deborah Heart and Lung Center Executive Board.

Joseph V. Doria, Jr. and his wife, the former Maribeth Keselica, were married in 1978. They have one daughter, Margaret Mary.
