: : Former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann has been axed from his job as special projects manager at the Jersey City Incinerator Authority. 

: : A political opponent of Mayor Jerramiah Healy, McCann was told Tuesday morning that his position was being eliminated by JCIA Director Oren Dabney. 

: : Even though McCann played a leading role in Assemblyman Lou Manzo's campaign for mayor last year - a race that concluded with Healy's election in November - McCann would not suggest yesterday that the elimination of his position was tied to politics. 

: : "At this point I am not speculating on anything," McCann said. "They eliminated the position. I accept that explanation for now." 

: : Asked if he knew who decided the position was no longer needed, McCann said he wasn't sure. 

: : "I don't know," McCann said. "I wasn't told that much." 

: : Dabney said last night that the decision to abolish McCann's job was made by JCIA's "personnel committee and executive staff," but refused to answer other questions, including whether or not other positions in the agency were slated for elimination. 

: : McCann, who worked for the JCIA for three years and was appointed by the late Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, said he was offered two weeks severance pay and was told not to report after Tuesday. 

: : Having first served the agency in the capacity of recycling manager, McCann was most recently assigned to various projects, including investigating illegal dumping. 

: : His annual salary was $47,310, officials said. 

: : Under normal circumstances, McCann said, he would have been given the option of returning to his old job as recycling manager, a position that has remained unfilled since he assumed the job of special projects manager, which was created for him roughly a year ago. 

: : McCann said he was not offered his old job back, nor did he request it. 

: : During the mayoral campaign, McCann admitted having shown about a half-dozen people photographs he obtained of a naked Healy seated on his front stoop. McCann denied playing any role in taking the pictures, but the former two-term mayor - who was convicted in 1991 of tax fraud unrelated to his office - has been a political thorn in the side of Healy and his allies for some time. 

: : Last year, McCann backed slates in the June Democratic primary election opposed by Healy boosters City Councilman William Gaughan and Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise. 

: : In May, Gaughan charged McCann with campaigning on company time and sought time sheets from the JCIA to prove it. 

: : A week later, McCann accused Gaughan of violating the law by maintaining two illegal apartments in a house zoned as a one-family. 

: : Neither of the crisscrossing allegations was ever proven.
