Jersey City Guide

Posted by Dan Pelosi on June 15, 2004 at 10:23:15:

There’s an eminent danger creeping up on us that will destroy the quality of all our lives, and prevent anyone in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, or almost anywhere else in Jersey City, from raising a healthy child or family.

I know this sounds really dramatic, but it’s 100% true. For those of you who don’t know, about a year ago the EPA asked to hear from anyone opposed to a garbage transfer station off St Paul’s Ave (which is about a mile from our neighborhood). Although we found out about this at the 11th hour, well over 100 letters were sent to the EPA in protest.

Personally, I though this was a dead issue, but then I saw an article in the Journal yesterday (the link is below, otherwise go to www.nj.com/jjournal and click Jersey City), and saw that the state EPA has actually given initial approval!

http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerseycity/index.ssf?/base/news-2/1087204305315481.xml

What this station will do is:

- process 99 TONS OF GARBAGE PER DAY, 6 DAYS A WEEK, UNTIL 10PM AT NIGHT

-bring in 38 TRUCKS PER DAY to deliver this

-handle construction debris, which we all know contain asbestos/chromium/ and God knows what other hazardous materials. There’s no way to regulate what someone throws out in the trash, so although the station owners say they won’t handle hazardous materials, we can’t just blindly accept this at face value

We’ve all been outside, especially on these recent hot evenings, and smelled weird stuff coming from the Hackensack River/Newark Bay.

Can you imagine that multiplied 38 times? Can you imagine never being able to open the window to your apartment without becoming sick from the stench of rotting trash? How about having your children or grandchildren developing asthma, or even cancer, at a young age because 99 tons of disgusting, filthy, dangerous, garbage is being dumped on your doorstep? How about never being able to take a stroll through Lincoln Park in the spring, having a BBQ outside in the summer, or even being able to get out of JC for the day because of 38 filthy trucks blocking your way?

Well, this is exactly what you should be prepared for if this goes through.

If anyone has any ideas (especially those that were involved when this came up last year) as to how we can stop this, PLEASE put a posting on this site.

Let’s not let the state or big business treat US like garbage!
