Jersey City Guide

Posted by David Casson on July 11, 2004 at 10:03:29:

Just to keep everyone up to speed...we had a couple of incidents recently in the neighborhood (specifically on Bergen Avenue betweeen Gifford and Harrison Avenues.

On the 4th of July at about 11:45pm, we had a group of about 50 teens running down Welsh Lane from Bergen and thru the alleyway between 166 & 168 Harrison Avenue. After about 1/2 the crowd was onto Harrison, they started running back screaming "He's got a gun" and the crowd started running back into Welsh Lane towards Bergen. A few actually broke into one of my neighbor's back yards to hide and a few broke off pieces of their stockade fencing to use as weapons. I was out with company in my back yard when all this occurred and called 911 immediately when the crowd started coming down Welsh Lane from Bergen (with a crowd that size and running, you just know that there will be trouble).

Another neighbor reported to me that the police did arrest several teens in front of the Ukrainian School on the Bentley side shortly afterward.

A few nights later (Thursday 8th July), there was gunshots on Emory Street. There is little doubt that these incidents are related.

Michele M. from the Emory Street Block Association (the gun shots were right in front of her home on Thursday) and I will be meeting to come up with a plan to draw attention from Acting Mayor Smith and our respective councilpersons (Mary Donnelly and Viola Richardson) as well as the Councilmembers-At-Large who also represent our areas. If anyone wants to join Michele and I to come up with a counter-offence, please contact me. This may include speaking at a city council meeting, meeting with the council people/Mayor as a group and meeting with the new West District Captain (yes, we have a new one---again!). I think that his name is Captain Took.

I have repeated reported problems in the areas of Bergen/Gifford/Emory at several West District Police meetings and we are still getting no action to solve this problem. We may need to go to a higher level at this point before someone gets hurt.

For those of you who may not know Michele, she is a community activist that is very active in not only her street but also in the rebirth of Monticello Avenue into an Arts & Entertainment District that we will all benefit from as well as the community in general. Emory Street Block Association, although outside our eastern boundary, is very supportive of what we in WB/LPNC are doing and we work closely on a variety of community projects from Monticello Avenue to the Medical Center to the Bergen Communities United group that was formed by Fairmont Housing in an effort to unite all the communities from Summit Avenue over to West Side and from Highland Avenue down to Communipaw (a much larger area than what we in WB/LPNC are involved with, but this has allowed us to link up with other people outside our neighborhood that are just a pro-active as we are).

Please contact me by phone or by e-mail if you want to help get this problem solved once and for all.
