Below is an e-mail that I received this afternoon from the Friends of the Loew's. Kindly note that WB/LPNC is not affiliated with the FOL however, they are bring classic movies to the Journal Square area and if you haven't been inside the Loew's Jersey at Journal Square, your missing a real treat. Thanks, David. __________________________________________________________ Despite the City's promise in June, the lease of the Loew's to FOL has NOT been signed. FOL waited throughout the summer to send out an update because we continued to hope that discussions with the City would imminently result in closure. Unfortunately, however, that did not happen. We are hoping to email out a more detailed explanation of our situation before our 75th Anniversary film series the 28th. "Some people say the story of the Loew's Jersey is like a Frank Capra movie . . . . . . So it seemed only natural to mark the Theatre's 75th Anniversary with one --- " On September 28 at 7:45 PM the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre at Journal Square, Jersey City will celebrate its 75th Anniversary with one of the most acclaimed movies of the Theatre's first full decade – "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" Starring James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains (1939 – 130 mins. – B&W)
The evening will also pay tribute to the spirit of civic activism that first saved the Landmark Loew's from demolition and is now restoring it. A public ceremony will be presented from 7:15 to 7:45 PM on the main stage. The 1929 admission of 35 cents will be re-instate for the night! Celebration of the Loew's 75th Anniversary will continue on the weekend with a selection of films spanning the 1940s, `50s, 60's and 70's. "How do you continue celebrating the 75th Anniversary of a Movie Palace?"
The Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre at Journal Square will show 4 movies from 4 decades: Friday, October 1 8 PM -- "The Maltese Falcon" Starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenfield, Mary Astor (1941 – 101 mins. – B&W) John Huston's directorial debut made Humphrey Bogart a star and set the mold for the detective anti-hero in the movies. Bogart plays Sam Spade, a hard-boiled private eye trying to untangle the web spun by Mary Astor's femme fatale, figure out who killed his partner, and stay ahead of Lorre and Greenfield, international scoundrels searching for a mysterious statuette in the shape of a falcon. Saturday, October 2 3:30 PM -- To Be Announced NOTE: A last-minute title unavailability has required a programming change. A new title will be confirmed soon. Patrons should call for listing update. Saturday, October 2 7:30 PM -- "Spartacus" Starring Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton, Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis. Directed by Stanley Kubrick (1960 – 196 mins. – Color) A rare Big Screen presentation of the restored version of this super wide-screen spectacular. A star-studded, sweeping epic that traces a slave revolt in ancient Rome and chronicles the Empire's cruelty and degeneration. Winner of 4 Academy Awards. Sweeping vistas and spectacular action scenes make this a "must" to be seen on a big screen. Sunday, October 3 2 PM – "Superman: The Movie" Starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando (1978 – 150 mins. – Color) The film introduced Christopher Reeve and made comic book characters big box office as it recounts the origin of the most famous super-hero. It is a big budget spectacle, filled with action, special effects and a surprising (and well placed) amount of humor. A quarter of a century later, the film also contains some nostalgic views of New York City, including the World Trade Center. Admission for each film is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and children 12 years old and younger. Discount off-street parking is now available in the adjoining Square Ramp Garage. Patrons present a coupon as they exit the garage. Coupon provided at our box office.
The Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre presents its classic films on a 50 foot wide screen using carbon arc illumination for the brightest, whitest light.
