Just to keep everyone up to speed...the Parking Authority is seeking to sell the parking lot at Fairmount and Monticello to the Redevelopment Agency for $450,000.00. The Redevelopment Agency has a developer (Pronti Construction---not Gene O'Connell who wanted to buy the lot 2 years ago) wanting to convert this commercial parking lot to housing. The Parking Authority is wanting to put in a protective covenant on the sale that will dedicate 60 spaces on the Bergen Avenue side to CURRENT residents of our area (they have a total of 50 to 55 spaces sold per month for resident parking and this covenant aims to protect the current residents who park there). We had thought that this matter was settled however, it seems to have cropped up again.

Michele Massey of Emory Street (and President of Monticello CDC) and I were in attendance and persuaded the Parking Authority to table the resolution to sell the lot until the next meeting on October 19th. We will need this parking lot for the soon to be re-developed Monticello Avenue Arts & Entertainment District. Both Charlene and I sit on the Board of Directors of Monticello CDC and are working in concert with other groups (Emory Street Block Association, Astor Place Neighborhood Association) within MCDC to make Monticello Avenue an asset to our community that will provide amenities that our area is sorely lacking (real restaurants, coffee houses, book stores, jazz clubs, et cetera).

You'll probably be hearing lots about Monticello Avenue in the coming months as this redevelopment combined with the old Medical Center complex redevelopment will focus lots of attention on our neighborhood from people wanting to move in as well as from developers wanting to do projects in our area. If you have any questions about MCDC, please ask either Charlene or me and we will be very happy to answer them. You can either post them on this board or send by e-mail.
