Bring a Friend to The 2nd Annual "Out of the Darkness" Suicide Prevention Community Walk Sponsored by the The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Sunday, September 18th in New Brunswick, NJ In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 18 minutes, claiming over 30,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made about every 45 seconds. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds and the second major cause of death among college students. In this country approximately 20 million people suffer from serious depression and close to 1 million people attempt suicide each year. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the only non-profit organization exclusively devoted to funding the research, education, and treatment programs needed to prevent suicide. And AFSP assists survivors of suicide loss and involves them in its prevention work. By walking in AFSP's "Out of the Darkness" community walks, you will be joining forces with thousands of people nationwide to raise money to fund AFSP's vital programs to prevent suicide and save lives, and increase national awareness about depression and suicide. This year we hope to build on the sucess of last years walk that raised over $50,000. This year AFSP is sponsoring a "Bring A Friend" Campaign, encouraging all community members in New Jersey to participate in this important awareness event, and encourage their family and friends to do the same. Suicide is a major national health problem that takes an enormous toll on family, friends, co-workers and the entire community, and it takes the involvement of all those individuals to work towards a solution. To register for the September 18th Walk, donate, or for more information, or to find out about other volunteer opportunities, please email Maya Enista, New Jersey Director at menista@afsp.org .
