: : : I just had a company called "Chimney Technicians" come to clean my chimney.  Within 5 minutes of walking inside my house, the job escalated from a simple cleaning up to having my chimney lined (BTW, my chimney was lined a couple of years ago)and repaired (the job went from $35.00 to a price that was not directly quoted but I was told "over $1000.00").  The repair was to fix the carbon monoxide that was supposedly leaking inside my home.

: : : I pointed out an overhead CO detector and the story changed after the guy went out to the truck to get his co-worker.  The co-worker said that I had a lining but it wasn't installed correctly and needed replacement.  I asked them to leave without doing the cleaning.

: : : This company called us to come clean our chimney for $35.00...we did not call them.  No doubt, they got our name from a mailing list or something that was supplied by our regular chimney cleaner or our oil company.

: : : Please everyone, be aware of these types of companies.  While I will stop short of calling them a scam, they certainly left a very bad impression on me.  Everyone should ask their oil company or any other service vendor if they sell their customer lists to other service vendors and then make the decision if you are comfortable having your information sold to other companies.  Also ask for references that you can contact (and do, by all means, call the references to make sure that they check out).
