Since there's so little traffic here, I suggest you check the archives at j c list.com (type it in without the spaces, as this lame message board bans me from writing it out.) This has been asked and answered there a few times, although perhaps without the families/children spin. There are definitely families, but it's not like Park Slope by any means. I see day care facilities around, but have no basis to comment on their quality. The walk to the PATH could be up to 20 mins, although some streets that would be considered Lincoln Park neighborhood would be less than 15 mins. Also the 99S bus to Port Authority stops every couple blocks along JFK Blvd. It costs more than the PATH and you're tied to a bus schedule, but depending on where you work in NYC, it might be the better option. Most people here have cars, but on-street parking is difficult, and finding a private spot to rent can also be a challenge.
