: I recently moved into a 4 story 30+ apartment building in Jersey City from Manhattan. I just found out that am paying twice the amount in rent than my neighbors who have the exact size apartment as us. How do I find out if I'm living in a rent stablized/controlled apartment building and If I am living in a RSB, can my landlord charge that much rent legally? Thanks. Unless the building is a condominium, anything over four units is under rent control. If the owner did a large amount of improvements to the unit, the City might have granted a substantial rent increase. That would need to be applied for and registered. On Monday, contact the Mayor's Action Bureau at 201-547-4900 to discuss the situation.
